What are the types of parking and precautions while passing parking roads?

Parallel Parking:

Parallel parking means parking vehicles in a line, front to rear, next to the left side of the road. For parallel parking on the left-hand side of the road, find a parking area that is about one and half times longer than your vehicle. Check the traffic beside and behind through your mirrors and over the shoulder and signal to alert other drivers.

Drive alongside the vehicle ahead of the empty space, leaving about a met        er bet ween the vehicles. Stop when your rear bumper is in line with the other vehicle.

  • Slowly reverse into the space, turning the steering wheel anti-clockwise. Make sure you have cleared the vehicle ahead.
  • When you can see the outside rear corner of the vehicle in front of your space, turn the steering wheel clockwise. Look back so that you do not hit the vehicle already parked behind you.
  • Bring your vehicle in line with the curb.
  • If your vehicle is not parallel to the curb, drive forward to straighten. Make sure the wheels of the car are straight.
  • When you are properly parked, pull the handbrake and shift into first or reverse gear. Turn off the engine. Remove the key from the ignition.
  • Check traffic before opening your door. Close the window and lock your vehicle.

Angular Parking:

Angular parking is parking the vehicle at an angle to the curb of the road.

  • Look through the mirrors and over the shoulder for traffic behind you.
  • Give left indicator to signal that you intend to park the vehicle.
  • Steer into the parking space and straighten the wheels.
  • Keep equal distance on both sides, pull the handbrake and shift into first or reverse gear.
  • Look through the mirrors and over the shoulder, if the way is clear reverse slowly. Make sure there is no vehicle; take extra care of cycles, rickshaws and pedestrians.

Perpendicular Parking:

Perpendicular parking is parking at right angle of the road curb. Reverse the vehicle in the parking space so that you can exit easily.

  • Pass ahead of the vehicle next to available space.
  • Look through the mirrors and over the shoulder for clear traffic.
  • Turn the steering anti-clockwise and reverse slowly until you are in the centre of the parking space.
  • Close the window and lock your vehicle.

Exit: Move the vehicle very slowly so that you get a clear view of the road. Look on both sides, indicate and move the vehicle out.

Parking at night:

Try to park the vehicle in a lighted place. Turn the parking light on, if it is dark. DONOT PARK:-

  • On a foot path or cycle track
  • Near traffic crossing, round-about or a turn.
  • On the main road.
  • Where your vehicle obstructs traffic.
  • On wrong side of the road.
  • Where parking is prohibited.

Precautions while passing parked vehicles:

  • Be attentive while passing by a parked vehicle. Some absent minded driver or passenger might open the door without looking.
  • A child might be playing and can come in front of you.
